Sanchar Saathi: a Centralised portal to trace the lost mobiles and mobile connections issued

Sanchar Sathi is a comprehensive telecom service in India introduced by the government of India under Digital India initiative to empower mobile subscribers, strengthen their security and increase awareness.

Sanchar Saathi contains various modules like CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register), TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection) etc.

In addition, provides latest updates and awareness material on different aspects related to end user security, telecom and information security.

CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) module facilitates tracing of the lost/stolen and blocking of lost/stolen mobile devices in network of all telecom operators so that lost/stolen devices cannot be used in India.

Anyone tries to use the blocked mobile phone, its traceability is generated. Once mobile phone is found it can be unblocked on the portal for its normal use by the user.

TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection) module enables the number of mobile connections taken by the subscriber in his/her name.

What should know the Mobile User?

IMEI Number:

The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) unique number to each and every mobile equipment (ME). The IMEI is a 15 digit number and the first eight digits shows Type Approval Code (TAC) of mobile. Dual SIM phones will have two IMEI numbers.

IMEI is allocated by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) to manufacturer, brand owners etc. and is required to implant genuine IMEI number in mobile devices at the time of manufacturing.

IMEI verification message provides information about the manufacturer, device type, brand name, and model number.

Dial *#06# in their device to check the IMEI number or sending SMS “KYM<15 digit IMEI number>” to 14422.

EIR Number:

Physical handsets of IMEI numbers are stored in an Equipment Identity Register [“EIR”]. It is a network entity used in GSM networks and every mobile network in India has an EIR. The mobile network operator’s primary tool used to prevent the connection and use of stolen or counterfeited devices is the Equipment Identity Register (EIR).

The CEIR acts as a central system for all network operators connected to their EIRs to share blacklisted mobile devices so that devices blacklisted in one network will not work on other networks even if the SIM card in the device is changed.

What to be done when lost/stolen mobile device?

File a report with the police.

Get a duplicate SIM Card for the lost number from your telecom service provider. This is essential to receive OTP for submitting the request to block the mobile using IMEI.

Submission of form in the website (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in).

After submitting the form, a Request ID will be provided for checking the status of request and for unblocking the IMEI in future.

Note: As per TRAI's regulation, SMS facility on re-issued SIMs is enabled after 24 hours of SIM activation.
